Last of the Summer Concerts!

It’s hard to believe, but many of the free summer concerts are coming to an end this weekend. Catch the final shows of the season before school starts and the excitement of fall begins! Also in Denver this weekend is the spectacular Parade of Homes—get a glimpse inside some of Denver and Aurora’s ultimate abodes for some inspirational ideas to use in your own home!

TODAY/TONIGHT, August 8

TUSKEGEE AIRMEN LECTURE
The complexity of race issues in America extend back as long as the country’s history. This lecture examines a chapter of this history through the unique lens of race in the military during World War II, with the story of the Tuskegee Airmen.

These groups of African American pilots were the first black military aviators in the U.S. armed forces. Come hear their story of struggle and triumph and see how this chapter fits into today’s current conversation about race.

LET THERE BE LIGHT!
A specially trained guide takes visitors with early-stage Alzheimer’s or dementia and their care partners through a unique art experience on the second Thursday of every month at the Denver Art Museum. 

This month’s focus is on Light—and how artists understand it and its effects through their work. The Light Show is a current exhibit at the museum with over 250 objects that show the metaphorical, spiritual, and divine representations of light in art. The Creative Aging programs have been designed for those age 55+ but are open to adults of all ages. This exhibit is free for registered visitors.

LAST SOUTHLANDS SUMMER CONCERT
Come out and dance one last time this summer to the groovin’ sounds of Phat Daddy, one of Denver’s most energetic and versatile bands! You’ll hear a wide range of rock, R&B, and pop tunes from the 1950s to the present, with a little country, hip hop, and jazz thrown in!

MOJABLU FINAL CONCERT OF THE SUMMER
Wash Park is a powerhouse band, featuring dynamic vocalists, a full horn section, and a rhythm section, that delivers an energy-filled concert of danceable music! You will be on your feet moving along with the choreographed front line of the the band!

Voted as Denver A-List’s #2 Band in the state, Wash Park has been delighting crowds since its inception in 2009. The group is known for its powerful and faithful reproductions of the horn band era dance music from the 70s to the top 40 hits of today.

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
Imagine Anna Karenina in Paris in the Roaring Twenties, and you’ll get a sense of what this dazzling musical is like! Based on the film by the same name, Anastasia is a delightful stage adaptation of the epic story, with music that is as lush as the set designs and costumes.

Journey with Anya as she escapes from the clutches of a ruthless Soviet officer to the euphoria of Paris, where she is befriended by a handsome con-man and an affable ex-aristocrat. As the adventurous drama unfolds, you’ll be swept along with Anya in her quest for love and belonging!

SECOND CITY TAKES ON LOVE
The famous Chicago comedy troupe that brought us Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, and many other comic geniuses is in town with their current company of brilliant comedians.

CHICAGO ON STAGE
Roxie Hart and the whole steamy Roaring Twenties scene is back in a spectacular new production of the longest running show in Broadway history! KIDS’ NIGHT OUT AT THE LAKEHOUSE
Treat the kids—and yourself—to the Southshore YMCA’s Kids’ Night Out! You can enjoy your own Parents’ Night Out, knowing they will be safe and well cared-for, while they have a ton of fun! The evening includes dinner, crafts, games, and a screening of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Princess and the Frog – a look at the lives of arrogant, carefree Prince Naveen and hardworking waitress Tiana. When they cross paths, Prince Naveen is transformed into a frog by a conniving voodoo magician and Tiana, follows suit, upon kissing the royal frog! THE SISTINE CHAPEL FOR CHILDREN

HOPS AT THE HANGAR
