The Smell and Taste of Fall

October 2, 2018

October may not be official pumpkin spice month but that’s when the smell and taste of fall is in the air and menus change to accommodate the bounty of fall harvests. We rounded up some of the best fall recipes and seasonal goodies so you can make the most of mild temperatures and celebrate the transition to one of our favorite seasons at Southshore.

Salad Starters for Fall

Taking advantage of the season’s stars, Taste of Home combines unexpected ingredients for delectable fall salads. There’s something for every palate with 30 salad recipes for fall (including a Three-Grain Salad with apples, green onions, cranberries, barley, wheat berries and brown rice in a tangy vinegar dressing) in this Taste of Home collection.

Fall Main Dish Recipes

From one-pan dinners like Cider-Braised Chicken, Apple and Brussel Sprouts to pot roast with a scrummy red-wine sauce –these 50 fabulous fall recipes from Midwest Living add the flavor of apples, pumpkins, and harvested veggies to entrees. Most are perfect for Sunday dinner or a casual get-together. Keep scrolling for the Roasted Pork with Apple-Walnut Salsa and Harvest Chipotle Chili.

To take advantage of the final offerings from the farmer’s market at Southlands, check out Food Network’s favorites from Guy Fieri, Alton Brown, Giada and Alex Guarnaschelli. Goodies like Skillet Squash Au Gratin, with breadcrumbs and lots of cheesy goodness, Sweet Potato Mash with brown butter and fried sages and Gingered Pears and Parsnips offer the celebrity chefs’ tasty twists on fall dishes.

The Farmer’s Market at Southlands on Main Street is open Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with its late harvest of fruits (like Palisade peaches), vegetables (corn, peppers, eggplant), roasted chiles, organic meats and other tasty produce!

Better than a Latté

It must be the combination of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger that makes pumpkin spice so pleasing to the senses. You can make your own with this recipe from Delish to add to everything from muffins and cheesecake to Jell-O shots and cocktails. Leave it to Betty Crocker to design the perfect pie recipe, complete with a video tutorial (plus 10 other weeknight fall desserts!).

And pumpkin spice isn’t only for sweets. Chowhound offers up a butternut squash soup with the fragrant essence blitzed in, as well as pumpkin-spiced popcorn and chickpea snacks.
