It’s still too soon to attend the theatre, but DCPA is bringing the theatre to you! For one night only this weekend, you can be in the audience of an exciting livestream event, direct from New York City! Award-winning singer and actress, Laura Benanti, will be putting on a show filled with Broadway songs and stories from her life. Another virtual event that’s closer to home is Aurora’s Mini-Con—all the excitement of fandom and cosplay in an exciting virtual space!

HISTORY OF THE A-BOMB
This important topic is the center of a discussion that revolves around the way the invention of the atomic bomb changed our world. It’s been 75 years since Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and we have been living in the nuclear age ever since.
Learn about the origins and history of atomic weapons, including the Manhattan Project and the nuclear arms race during the Cold War. The discussion will conclude with a look at current nuclear proliferation concerns.

HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE
Make a difference in your community by donating to We Don’t Waste, a local nonprofit that recovers and distributes food that would otherwise go to waste. The need for food pantries is especially high this holiday season due to COVID-19 and the number of people who have lost their jobs. Stanley Marketplace is hosting this food drive, where you can drop off non-perishable food to one of several businesses. Your donation of shelf-stable foods will help We Don’t Waste continue to meet the need in the community for nutritious foods.

AWARD-WINNING VIRTUAL REALITY
While you’re in the Stanley Marketplace, check out an Oscar® award-winning virtual reality art installation you can walk through and interact with! Carne y Arena is an important work that explores the journey of immigrants and refugees from their perspective. The art installation is part film, part narrative space with human characters that are based on true accounts.

In preparation for Aurora’s Virtual Mini-Con this weekend, you are invited to submit an entry in one of three categories: cosplay, fan art, or fan fiction. All fandoms are welcome! Just send a photo of yourself in cosplay, a piece of original fan art, or an original flash fan fiction before TODAY’s deadline. Winners will be announced on Facebook at the end of Virtual Aurora Mini-Con on Sunday, at 4:00 p.m.

LIVE VIRTUAL CONCERT FROM BROADWAY
This exciting livestream direct from New York’s Shubert Virtual Studios is an evening with Tony Award-winning actress and singer Laura Benanti. The show will be filled with Broadway show tunes, pop songs, and personal stories from Benanti’s life, including her recent publication of her book, M is for Mama (and also Merlot): A Modern Mom’s ABCs. Benanti made headlines recently when she created an empowering campaign, #SunshineSongs, which invited students whose school musical productions were canceled this year due to the pandemic to share videos of the performances they were not able to give on social platforms.
Benanti won accolades for her roles in the My Fair Lady revival as well as Steve Martin’s Meteor Shower and She Loves Me. She won a Tony for her featured role in Gypsy and most recently a Drama Desk Award for her performance in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. She’s appeared in numerous shows on the small screen, including Younger, Supergirl, Nashville, The Good Wife, and Nurse Jackie. Film roles include Worth and the upcoming Here Today.
